She began creating sculptural forms out of found wood on the roof of her apartment building, Stuyvesant's Folly, in the mid-1940s. At a young age, Bourgeois took on the role of nurse to her mother, who succumbed to Spanish Flu after WWI, and at age 11, Bourgeois witnessed her father’s affair with their live-in English tutor, Sadie Gordon Richmond.
Bourgeois attended several different academies and artist’s ateliers in Paris, and took classes at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière, the École des Beaux-Arts, and the École du Louvre. Louise Bourgeois was born in Paris in 1911 and named after her father, Louis, who had wanted a son.
The family, including Bourgeois’s older sister, Henriette, lived on Boulevard Saint Germain, where Louis and Joséphine continued the Fauriaux family antique business by opening a tapestry gallery.

Bourgeois’s mother died in September 1932. Bourgeois’ art fed a growing desire for women … Bourgeois initially entered Sorbonne University to study mathematics, a subject whose immutable principles she claimed gave her much needed peace of mind. That work opened the floodgates to Bourgeois mining the furthest depths of her consciousness. Bourgeois's often brooding and sexually explicit subject matter and her focus on three-dimensional form were rare for women artists at the time. This manifested in virtually all Bourgeois’ work, but particularly Cells, a series she began making in the late 80s. The title is the familiar French word for Mother (akin to Mummy).

Other honors included the Grand Prix National de Sculpture from the French government in 1991; the National Medal of Arts, presented by President Bill Clinton in 1997; the first lifetime achievement award from the International Sculpture Center in Washington D.C,; and election as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She claimed that she was named after Louise Michel (1830-1905), an anarchist feminist from the days of the French Commune (1870-71).
Winters were spent in warmer climates, and Bourgeois’s education was frequently interrupted to help care for her mother. However, profoundly depressed by her mother’s death, she soon turned to art.

During her teens, Bourgeois’ father began an affair with the family’s resident English governess, Sadie Gordon Richmond. This entangled situation, and the effect her father’s behavior had on Bourgeois, would later find expression in her art. After her mother’s death however, Bourgeois abandoned mathematics to pursue art, earning her living by giving guided tours at the Louvre. Soon after her arrival in New York, Bourgeois enrolled at the Art Students League, where she began to make prints, and in 1945, she had her first solo exhibition of paintings at the Bertha Schaefer Gallery, New York. In the early 50s, she had begun receiving psychoanalysis treatment four times a week, this would continue for over 30 years and lead Bourgeois to immerse herself in the teachings of Freud.
She presented a thirty-foot steel and marble spider, Bourgeois was named Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French minister of culture in 1983. In 1949, Bourgeois exhibited this work for the first time in a solo show, Throughout the 1940s and 50s, Bourgeois’s work was presented with Abstract Expressionist artists, including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning, in various group exhibitions. She only held the needle as a hobby.
