Everything feels overstated, but I do like the main thesis of it, and occasionally there are some really nice and subtle points. (Haven't read I am a strange loop, so not answering your question.

I consider both among my absolute favourite books, but for very different reasons. It is, as with other somatic theories, even possible that oscillating fields in the brain have a lot to do with consciousness and personal identity. Many people to whom I've talked about it prefer it because it requires less (and less repeated: GEB rewards rereading) engagement. I find Hofstadter's concept of strange loop and how it explains consciousness to be very compelling.. While GEB was much more fun to read and engaging, it does feel a bit scattered at times and kind of fizzles out by the end. For me, reading IAASL was sort of like hearing a long interview with a favorite musician discussing one of his most successful works many years after its release.

Which one should I read first? I certainly understood the overarching pattern in GEB, but sometimes I felt that he had failed to close the loop (so to speak), that there were a few loose ends, that some of the abstractions could have been connected more concretely to the theme.

Let's start with Gödel, Escher, Bach. However I find the writing style in "Goedel Escher and Bach" to be too distracting and "I am a strange loop" to be too gee-whiz pop-sciency. I Am A Strange Loop attempts to correct this problem by better illustrating how inanimate matter can lead to animate beings with awareness and consciousness.

The criticism that he goes on and on after you already get what he's trying to say is a fair one, but I think thats a better problem to have than just getting lost and not getting it and giving up which is something that totally happens to people with GEB, like in the prepositional calculus chapters. I could either read Strange Loop before my college semester starts. They were written at much different points in Hofstadters life.


It seems like GEB would be a great resource for understanding many important concepts behind ‘consciousness’. Essentially, the trick that makes it work in the end is like variable capture in a Lisp macro. (I then immediately read I'm about halfway through it, and although it has many compelling ideas I don't like it as much as GEB (not that I expected to). You get the most out of it by taking a long time to work on the puzzles explicitly presented, and a few hidden puzzles which are there, but only hinted at. They deal with pretty different (although weirdly related) subjects.I think it boils down to your education in mathematics. I expected it to bridge the gap between the more and less mathematical parts of GEB, but it barely touches on the math at all.Hofstadter himself has said that many people miss the overarching point of GEB, seeing it as a collection of neat ideas rather than an argument for a single idea. I’m currently in college studying Cognitive Science and Computer Science. While GEB was much more fun to read and engaging, it does feel a bit scattered at times and kind of fizzles out by the end. I think you will fly through it.But GEB is a large and sometimes technical book. He wrote GEB in his 20's and he wrote Strange Loop recently. Finally I got at least some inkling of how the proof worked. After the semester ends, I could decide to read GEB.Alternatively, I could just dive into GEB right now, and maybe read IAASL later.For those of you who have read both books, what would you recommend?
