When I went to college I really struggled with my choice of not pursuing a collegiate career IThis is beautifully and powerfully written!
Two U.S. National teammates who publicly broke their silence early on were UCLA Bruins: My deepest respect to all of you who have braved the pain to stand for justice and change.
My teammates and friends have been through enough and now it’s time for change, because the current and future gymnasts do not deserve to live in anxiety, fear or be unprotected like I was.”Val, great article. I’ve saw the why he ignored and shamed them myself years ago! A governing body of any sport or organization requires / needs a tool through which an actual victim can report incidents of abuse without fear of reprisal / retaliation. This is their sport.
They pulled out. I questioned what I saw. I am so sorry for the young athletes. 6.
For me too, the statements have been life altering. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts.
One was scared of the other!!
I wish I could think of what I could have done differently. I was reluctant to comment on this post as I too was subjected to ridicule and humiliation at the hands of Martha (I used to think this lady was invincible – wow, how wrong I was). Keep pushing, follow the money.I don’t know if the sponsor’s knew but many, nearly all, are no longer sponsors. With each new year that elite gymnasts came to While I’m devastated by the circumstances I am so happy these brave women are finding their voice amongst each other. View Kathy Kelly’s profile on LinkedIn, the world's largest professional community. #TimesUp Anyone , parent or gymnast who aired a concern about abusive coaching methods or systemicWe tried to push back but the USGF (as it was named at the time) made the conscious decision to hand the “keys of the kingdom” to the Karolyi’s and there was nothing we, as coaches could do about it – made me finally leave the sport, but I still feel guilt that I could not support the good work of my athletes, who were damaged in the process.Thank you Miss Val! I want to know what thr USOC knew and when did they know it. WHY?Because of the CULTURE of the abuse!
In an interview with GymCastic (1:06:00), the gymnastics podcast, Aimee Boorman (Simone Biles’ coach) tells a story of how she rejected an invitation to The Ranch in early 2012. USA Gymnastics is accountable.
They’ve helped me find my voice, too, and that is empowering. I’ve been thinking that you have long had a too-close look at the massive damage done by our elite system, though I’ve only recently realized just how horrific that damage is.
This past summer I hosted an impromptu lunch with elite gymnasts dating back from the 1970s to the 2000s. You have always put the heart and soul of the young college gymnasts first, simultaneously providing an environment for healing of hurt, abuse, destruction and isolation.Thank you! Other.
Kathy Kelly. It was a terrible and horrific system…and we all knew. That’s my point. Who approved thw payoffs?

Thank you for creating a safe space for the athletes!Miss Val, I’ve been a huge fan of yours/UCLA since 1999. In one of their first trips to U.S. Women’s National Team training center, Aimee saw how Martha emotionally mistreated Simone and was afraid Simone might quit the sport if she returned so early in her career. My questions did nothing to help. Sick, sick, sick, sick. Have you googled her on any of the blogs? Go get them no more fearBecause there are just enough people willing to look the other way for champions to be made and for the “good of the sport” Also when parents are discouraged from being around and not knowing how their children are suffering abuse, the abuse continuesIt appears that there was, at the time, no tool to file a grievance against a coach, doctor, or gym anonymously.
