To a bistro or restaurant, a nice pair of pants (jeans or otherwise) with a collared shirt is usually what men wear … If it was a question about dress code for a restaurant, club or show, then it is different but the idea of having to conform or wear what the locals wear in a modern western city is daft. My wife is telling me that its a faux pas to wear jeans and nice cargo type pants? Cool is the rule, so pack a light, breathable jacket for any season.

I've heard this story a million times: American women come to Paris dressed comfortably and then immediately feel super uneasy and underdressed when they see how elegantly average women dress in Paris, and they need to run out and buy all new stuff for their stay in France just so they can blend in a little more and feel comfortable. Is this acceptable?What do men usually wear to a normal bistro/cafe for dinner nothing to fancy?If I am going to be walking miles and miles I want to be comfortable.I got back a week ago.

Ties are optional although a lot of Frenchmen wear them for work Ladies, I trust you to dress up more than I trust the guys, but once again, you really shouldn't wear shorts and flip flops to a restaurant. By dressing up a little, you are showing respect. Men, wear a polo shirt or button-down shirt rather than a graphic tee. I have been before and wear exactly what I wear when in I wear what I want. In general, Parisian men have a different sense of style than the average American male. Most Paris men have moved on from the beret and pencil-thin moustache, but some classics like the Breton tee, rollnecks and well-cut blazers remain.
