It does flesh out Crowe's character, who provides a narrative framework as well, but that actually works for the film and not against it. In the end, it is revealed that Lori saw Eric put the dead girl in the river, revealing the end twist that the whole while she was trying to have him kill her, and that she had finally committed suicide when she found out he wouldn't.

To me, it's a masterpiece. i went into this film with pretty low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.... to learn that my intuition is not faltering. But if you're a Cormier fan looking for a film that captures his ethos of hope through pain, his bleak "there is no light, so learn from the tunnel" themes are all present, which is why his books stand out and why this challenging and masterly crafted film will likely fail at the box office (as it has in Australia, where I'm from) and remain a minor masterpiece. But if you like such films as The Isle, Underground, Funny Games, it is a must. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Robert Cormier.Despite the good production, the whole story is a little improbable.Boring movie , a waste of Russel Crowe's talent. I'd always been a big fan of that TV show Cannonball when I was a kid, and thought that the idea of American trucks was very romantic. I base this on secondhand references, not having read Cormier's book, but have been motivated to put it on order at my library solely on the basis of this film.
