Titled “New Landscapes” the Istanbul Modern presents one of the most recent Yao Lu’s works, winner of the BMW-Paris Photo Prize for contemporary photography in 2008.
(Edo, now known as Tokyo, was a fashionable city even over 300 years ago and the artists who worked at the time were influenced by the festivities, firework displays and Lu, who is an artist and teacher at the photography department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, digitally assembled the images using photographs he took himself.
But photography is also very contemporary.
A critique of our times through a fairylike world. It can re-assemble and re-edit the things that we see in order to produce illusions that people see when they are in front of such photographic works. Resides in Beijing, China. At first glance these photographs by Chinese-born and Prix Pictet shortlisted photographer Yao's works are entirely man made. Chromogenic print.
But if you look more closely you will see something else.
"The Prix Pictet-shortlisted photographer's work brings to mind the Japanese master Hokusai - but look again
Yao Lu has won the 2008 BMW - Paris Photo Prize for contemporary photography. Lu has travelled round China photographing different signs of societal destruction – it is a complex, time-consuming project which is carried out in three stages.
The Istanbul Modern is presenting the work of Chinese photographer Yao Lu with new exhibition Los Nuevos Paisajes, on until the 22nd May.Lu´s aesthetic is based around ecology and industrial waste – and with landscapes created to look like classical Chinese paintings.. Yao Lu was born in Beijing, China in 1967.
In many ways, photographer Yao Lu uses conflict as a way to achieve harmony.
The rubbish dumps covered with the ‘shield’, a green netting, are ubiquitous in China. His apocalyptic mountains of rubbish covered up with fabric are an example of this visual message about human´s violence towards the planet. But Lu´s work is more than just political preaching – there is also a strong sense of poetic symbolism, and his representation of the beauty of Spring on the banks of the Bosforo is a true pleasure – and all the more so with this brilliant artist on show at the Istanbul modern.
New Landscapes - Yao Lu "Generally speaking, my works use the form of traditional Chinese painting to express the face of China," he says.
He directs his criticism at the damaging effects of industry on the environment. First, he covers mountains of rubbish with green fabric, photographs them from different angles, and then finally loads the images onto a computer, adding digital effects to give them an element of the classic Chinese water-colour landscape paintings.Lu´s skill as a photographer helps him to observe nature, in order to be able to transfer its imagery, beauty and impact onto the canvas, and combine them with a powerful conceptual message.
New Landscapes At first glance these images by artist Yao Lu might resemble traditional Chinese landscape paintings of cliffs, waterfalls, and mountains.

1967) documents his changing country in atmospheric works that look to the future through the lens of the past.
Like all his works, this work also prevents a formal classification, since it combines a number of techniques and media such as painting, photography and digital manipulation.
Location 529 West 20th Street Third Floor New York, NY … Yao Lu has created a thoughtful and timely series inspired by traditional Chinese paintings entitled New Landscapes in which mounds of garbage covered in green protective nets are assembled and reworked by computer to create images of rural mountain landscapes shrouded in the mist. In these works, you see images that are both real and fictional. The shapes resembling oriental landscape paintings of waterfalls, cliffs and mountains are in fact landfills and mounds of derelict rubble draped in the green mesh used to prevent dust blowing away from building sites or that cover skips while they’re in transit. These contaminated landscapes now seem very far from the idyllic paintings and prints by the school of Ukiyo-e which were influenced by the city of Edo and its residents between 1603–1867. In New Landscapes he aims to show how the increasing urbanisation of his home country is having an effect on the natural landscape and health of the environment. All Rights Reserved.
